(PARSIPPANY, N.J., January 11) -- DRS Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: DRS) announced today that it has been awarded $60 million in new orders from the U.S. Army to produce and install Driver Vision Enhancers (DVEs) on a wide range of combat and tactical wheeled vehicles.
The contracts were awarded to DRS by the U.S. Army's Communications-Electronics Command (CECOM) in Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. For these awards, DRS will provide DVEs with the Program Manager Forward Looking Infrared (PM FLIR) in Fort Belvoir, Virginia. This new order brings the value of the current DVE contract to $124 million.
Increasing drivers' vision capability, survivability and mobility in hazardous conditions during the day or night, the DVEs support U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps units deployed to Southwest Asia for Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. All three divisions of the company's DRS Sensors & Targeting Systems unit will be involved in fulfilling these orders for CECOM. The production of the DVEs' focal plane array sensors will be accomplished by the unit's Infrared Technologies Division, in Dallas, Texas. The assembly and testing of their B-Kits, sensor assemblies and display control modules will be accomplished by the Optronics Division in Palm Bay, Florida. DRS's uncooled infrared technology and electronics will be developed by the California Division in Cypress, California. The first production deliveries occurred in 2004 and are scheduled to continue through July 2008.
"As part of a significant, multi-year, U.S. Army program, these recent orders highlight our position as an industry leader in uncooled, high-performance thermal imaging solutions for the military," said James M. Baird, president of DRS's Reconnaissance, Surveillance & Target Acquisition (RSTA) Segment. "The quality and reliability of our DVEs support the military's objectives for increased mobility, survivability and situational awareness of ground combat operations under adverse conditions. DRS continues to demonstrate exceptional performance on this program, successfully increasing production to meet the urgent needs of the Army during war."
Utilizing DRS's Low-Power Uncooled Infrared (LPUIR) detector, thermally compensated optics and 800- by 600-pixel active matrix liquid crystal display panels, DRS-produced DVEs are upgradable, as improved optics and focal plane array sensors producing broader field of view and higher display resolution evolve, reducing system obsolescence.
