Aerospace industry welcomes inclusion in EU emissions trading scheme

SBAC, the UK's national trade association representing companies supplying civil air transport, aerospace defence, security and space today (21 December) welcomed the announcement that the EU Council of the 27 member states' governments has reached agreement to include aviation in the EU's emissions trading scheme.

Ian Godden, SBAC Chief Executive said, "The UK aviation industry has made great strides in improving fuel efficiency and is committed to achieving a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions from new aircraft by 2020. This progress relies on continued investment in new research and technology, as well as the engineering excellence of our member companies.

"The EU-wide scheme is a move in the right direction towards a fully international scheme. Such a programme should recognise improved environmental performance in aviation and act as an inspiration to action across the globe."
