Implant Sciences Receives Development Contract from DHS
Company to Develop Handheld Trace Explosives Sampler Using Proprietary Vortex Collection Technology
(Wakefield, Mass., February 7, 2008) -- --Implant Sciences Corporation (AMEX: IMX) a leading developer of advanced explosives detection products and technology, today announced the award of a six month $100,000 Phase I Small Business Innovation Research ("SBIR") contract by the Department of Homeland Security ("DHS"), Science & Technology Directorate in Washington, DC for the development of a handheld trace explosives sampler. The Company plans to use its proprietary vortex collection technology in the development of this handheld sampling device to augment the process of collecting the samples used in detecting and identifying a range of explosives materials. The contract management will be administered by the Department of Interior ("DOI") Acquisition Services Directorate, National Business Center.
Kenneth Ribeiro, Implant Sciences Vice President of R&D, commented, "Explosives sampling represents a unique problem in trace detection due to the unusual characteristics of explosives particles, some of which tend to cling to surfaces tenaciously. We believe the use of a compact and lightweight, portable hand sampler, incorporating our proprietary vortex collection technology, could improve the sampling process and ultimate detection of explosives particles. This improved sampling process could be used to detect explosives trapped on a wide range of objects such as carry-on luggage, parcels, packages and cargo. In addition, multiple handheld sampling units could be deployed in concert with a centralized trace explosives detection system to improve the efficiency and volume of articles screened. We are pleased to be working in partnership with the DOI and DHS and look forward to seeing our handheld sampler being used in the field as a new, cost effective tool in the detection of explosives."
