Thales to Overhaul Radar Sensors on Canadian Naval Vessels

(Hengelo, March 28, 2008) -- Recently, Public Works and Government Services Canada signed a EUR42 million contract with Thales Canada, Naval Services Division for Repair and Overhaul services for all the Thales radar systems currently in-service in the Canadian Navy's IROQUOIS Class destroyers and HALIFAX Class frigates. The duration of the contract is six years with two options of one year each.

One aspect of this contract is to perform complete overhauls of the upper deck components for the IROQUOIS Class LW 08 and DA 08 surveillance radars, along with the overhauls of the STIR and LIROD fire control systems. The overhaul program ensures that the Thales radars and fire control systems will continue to meet the operational requirements of the IROQUOIS Class destroyers.

The contract also includes a program to overhaul the HALIFAX Class STIR fire control systems. This program ensures that the STIR systems continue to provide reliable and effective fire control capability until the completion of the HALIFAX Class Modernization project, expected in 2017.

While no overhaul is required for either the Halifax or Iroquois Class electronic subsystems, the contract also provides for the repair of defective electronic components and the monitoring of obsolescence issues. With its continued focus on customer support, Thales has pursued a development program that has addressed obsolescence and maintainability issues for their radars while providing new and innovative technologies designed to significantly improve system reliability and enhance operational performance.

These overhaul programs enable the Canadian Navy to continue deploying its ships with confidence knowing that their radar and fire control systems are operating reliably and at optimal performance levels.
