Boeing Awards CAE Contract to Design OFT for US Navy

(Tampa, Fla., April 9, 2008) -- CAE has been awarded an initial contract by the Boeing Company to design and manufacture the prototype operational flight trainer (OFT) for the P-8A Poseidon.

The contract, valued at more than US$11 million, includes options for additional P-8A OFTs, which could exceed US$80 million over the next five years. The initial contract from Boeing was awarded last month during CAE's fiscal year 2008 and is included in the C$730 million military order intake announced earlier this week.

The P-8A Poseidon is a new long-range anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare aircraft currently being developed for the U.S. Navy by prime contractor Boeing. The P-8A, a derivative of Boeing's next-generation 737-800 aircraft, will be used for maritime and littoral operations. The Navy plans to acquire 108 P-8A aircraft to replace its current fleet of P-3C Orion aircraft.

Under the terms of the initial contract, CAE will design and manufacture the P-8A OFT hardware to Level D standards, the highest qualification for flight simulators. The P-8A OFT will feature the CAE True(tm) electric motion system, a new state-of-the-art all-electric motion system providing more accurate and authentic cues for pilot training. CAE will also provide the 737-800 OFT software baseline and simulation-based software lab environment to be used for P-8A development and integration tasks. CAE will deliver the first simulator in 2009 to Boeing, who will then install and integrate software specific to the P-8A aircraft.

"We are pleased that after a competitive procurement process, Boeing has selected CAE as its P-8A Poseidon training partner for the U.S. Navy," said John Lenyo, President and General Manager, CAE USA. "CAE has a unique history of developing prototype simulators for new aircraft and we look forward to adding the Boeing P-8A Poseidon to our list of industry firsts."
