EADS DS to Protect German Army Training Area
- TRS-3D naval radar to monitor sea and airspace
- Detection of approaching aircraft or ships
(August 11, 2008) -- EADS Defence & Security (DS) is to protect the German Armed Forces' air defence firing range in Todendorf with its tried-and-tested TRS-3D naval radar. As the company reported on Monday, Defence Electronics (DE), an integrated activity of EADS Defence & Security (DS), handed over the first naval radar in the world to be deployed in camp protection to the customer, the German Federal Office of Defence Technology and Procurement (BWB), in July.
The TRS-3D, more than 50 systems of which have already been sold to various naval forces around the world, is characterised by highly sophisticated signal processing techniques allowing surveillance of the airspace, both over land and water, as well as of the surface of the sea. In addition to this, the system is equipped with the MSSR 2000 I secondary radar for automatically identifying ships and aircraft, thus preventing aircraft and vessels from approaching unnoticed. This is a major requirement for protecting the military training site situated on the Baltic Sea near Kiel since conventional radars cannot work with the necessary reliability under the varying environmental conditions over land and sea.
"The operation of military facilities requires absolutely reliable sensors not only for their own protection, but also for the protection of their surroundings," explained Bernd Wenzler, CEO of Defence Electronics. "During deployment by naval forces and coast guard services around the world, our TRS-3D radar has shown that it is the right solution for these complex security requirements."
