GD Awarded $35 M for Ammunition Demilitarization

(St. Petersburg, Fla., August 14, 2008) -- The U.S. Army Field Support Command at Rock Island, Ill., has awarded General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems, a business unit of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), a $34.8 million modification to an existing demilitarization contract. This latest award for the demilitarization of obsolete and excess ammunition brings the total contract value to date to $151 million.

General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems currently oversees the resource recovery and recycling of six types of obsolete U.S. Department of Defense ammunition. To date, the company has demilitarized more than 90,000 tons of munitions through environmentally friendly and safe processes. Approximately 95 percent of the processed materials have been recovered for re-use or recycling.

"General Dynamics has a long history of performing ammunition demilitarization for the DoD. Under this contract, we manage the environmentally safe thermal treatment of excess and obsolete ammunition," said Dr. Dean Bartles, vice president and general manager of large caliber ammunition for General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems.
