UK Defence Industry Anti-corruption Forum News Category:
( United Kingdom, 12 June, 2006 ) The UK's leading defence companies and defence sector Trade Associations have joined forces to set up the UK Defence Industry Anti-Corruption Forum. Representatives from 11 companies and two Trade Associations met on 18 May 2006 for the inaugural meeting of the Forum.
The creation of the UK Defence Industry Anti-Corruption Forum reflects the shared determination of the key industrial partners to promote the prevention of bribery and corruption in the international defence market. All the participants in the inaugural meeting of the Forum have established policies in place that meet high ethical values, backed up with compliance procedures to ensure that their employees observe the laws in all the countries in which they operate. Their aspiration is that the Forum will help build on those policies and practices to ensure universally high standards in the global market.
The Forum builds on previous informal contacts on the relevant issues, and is intended to become a regular opportunity to exchange views and best practice. It will give the company representatives the opportunity to have regular updates on new legal and procedural requirements. The Forum will also provide an opportunity for UK defence companies to formulate views on international initiatives in this field and engage with recognised specialists in anti-corruption.
The inaugural meeting offered company representatives the opportunity to hear from external practitioners in the field, including the Institute for Business Ethics, Transparency International and the International Chamber of Commerce. The Minister for Defence Procurement, Lord Drayson, also spoke to the Forum to underline his strong support for the focus on achieving the highest ethical standards in the sector.
Upon closing the first meeting, all participants agreed that the Forum should meet regularly, with the next meeting planned to be held in the autumn of this year.
Lord Drayson, Minister for Defence Procurement, said: "I am delighted that the major UK defence companies and Trade Associations have taken this initiative. The importance of high standards of business ethics has never been greater. The Forum will provide an excellent means by which our defence industry can build on measures it already has in place, both by spreading best practice among UK-based firms, and by improving the UK's ability to strengthen industrial co-operation on this issue internationally."
Sally Howes, the Director General of the Society of British Aerospace Companies (SBAC), and Alan Sharman, Director General of the Defence Manufacturers Association (DMA), jointly commented in support of the Forum: "All the participants believe that the creation of the UK Defence Industry Anti-Corruption Forum will help demonstrate the continuing commitment of the UK defence industry to fighting corruption in the international defence market. All the companies involved already have in place ethical policies and processes to ensure that employees comply with the laws in all the countries in which they operate. The Forum will enable participants to learn from each other's experience, as well as from recognised experts, so that we can build on those policies and further strengthen the reputation of the whole of the UK Defence Industry."
Participants in the inaugural meeting of the UK Defence Industry Anti-Corruption Forum were: AgustaWestland; BAE Systems, Defence Manufacturers Association (DMA), Marshall Aerospace, Martin Baker, MBDA, Rolls-Royce, SELEX, Smiths Aerospace, Society of British Aerospace Companies (SBAC), Thales UK and VT Group plc.
