National Flight Data Management System Thailand Operational

(September 7, 2006) -- The national Flight Data Management System (FDMS) supplied by SELEX Sistemi Integrati, a Finmeccanica Company, to Aerothai, the Thai air traffic services operator, is now completely operational. At the end of a period of system start-up assistance, the client signed the certificate confirming the positive completion of activities and that the system is completely operational.

The Flight Data Management System managed by Aerothai is a complex system that coordinates all the national control centres and guarantees smooth, efficient management of the Thailand air traffic with positive effects on the whole Asian area. Indeed, in 2005, Aerothai handled 337,235 flights, of which more than 168,000 international flights, supplying services to approximately 80 airlines.

TungMahamek IFDP (Initial Flight Data Processing), TungMahamek ACC (Area Control Centre), TungMahamek APP (Approach Centre), Don Muang APP, Hatyai APP, Phuket APP, Phitsanulok APP and Chiang Mai APP are the sites that host the Thai FDP network that is also interconnected with the ATM (Air Traffic Management) infrastructures of Malaysia, Myanmar, P.R. China, Singapore and Vietnam.

The innovative architecture, based on the concept of distributed intelligence, allows more than 80 Controller Working Positions, located at the various national sites and interconnected via ATN (Aeronautical Telecommunication Network), to coordinate and transfer control of aircraft through the exchange of AIDC messages (Air Traffic Services Interfacility Data Communications) among the system's various servers.

The system integrates the ADS system (Automatic Dependent Surveillance), supplied in the past by SELEX Sistemi Integrati and in use for some time in Thailand, and supports the CPDLC application (Controller Pilot Data Link Communication). It is also integrated with the MHS (Message Handling System) for processing ATS (Air Traffic Services) and AIS/MET (Aeronautical Information Services/Meteorology) messages, and with the system for calculating overflight charges, statistics and logging.

SELEX Sistemi Integrati has already supplied Thailand with the whole ATM infrastructure for the En-Route and Approach ATM.
